MOTIFS: I HAVE BEEN PUZZLING OVER THIS TEXTILE FOR A LONG LONG TIME, TRYING TO DECIPHER THE MOTIFS IN THE CENTRAL BAND.  I HAVE NO CLUE, not a sausage – IF ANYONE KNOWS PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL!  I DO KNOW THAT IT’S FROM THE BIBOKI AREA OF THE ISLAND, AND THE LARGE LOZENGES MIGHT BE KAIF MOTIFS, REPRESENTING THE weaver’s links to their ancestors.  OR THEY MIGHT BE TURTLES.  let’s go with turtles.  THE NARROW HORIZONTAL BANDS ARE A COMMON FEATURE OF TIMORESE TEXTILES, AND FEATURE diddy geometrics: tiny ikat dots, dashes and squiggles.

TEXTILE DETAILS: THE INDONESIAN WORD ‘ikat’ means to ‘tie’ or ‘bind’, WHICH ALLUDES TO THE INTRICATE AND MASSIVELY LONGWINDED PROCESS OF CREATING THESE INCREDIBLE TEXTILES.  FROM PICKING THE COTTON TO SNIPPING THE FINAL THREAD, a single piece can take upwards of 14 months to create, AND IT’S NOT UNCOMMON TO TAKE SEVERAL YEARS.

THIS VINTAGE FABRIC COMES FROM A RECTANGULAR WAIST WRAP, A ‘SELIMUT’, WHICH IS THE traditional male dress in many parts of indonesia.  TWO IKAT TEXTILES ARE STITCHED TOGETHER TO FORM A FLAT BLANKET-LIKE PIECE, WHICH IS THEN WRAPPED AROUND THE WAIST AND FALLS TO JUST BELOW THE KNEES.

UNLIKE ALL OF OUR OTHER VINTAGE IKAT TEXTILES, THE ONES COMING OUT OF TIMOR ISLAND HAVE FREQUENTLY FEATURED synthetic dyes SINCE THE 1960’S.  IT’S A SHAME FOR SURE WE AGREE, BUT THESE HAND-WOVEN IKATS ARE STILL RATHER BEAUTIFUL!  THE BRIGHT FUN SHADES IN THIS TEXTILE, THE sky blue and the peach, ARE DEFINITELY SYNTHETIC.  HOWEVER WE THINK THE softer blush and pink SHADES ARE FROM THE BARK AND ROOTS OF THE MORINDA TREE.  THE ECRU SHADE OCCURS WHERE THE WRAPPED PANDAN LEAVES PREVENT THE DYE FROM ENTERING THE THREADS.

WRINKLES: THE OCCASIONAL WRINKLE OR SUNSPOT THAT SOME OF OUR PIECES HAVE ACQUIRED OVER THE YEARS, AS WELL AS THEIR HANDMADE  QUIRKS, ARE PART OF THEIR one of a kind artisanal charm.  THERE ARE A COUPLE OF VERY MINOR BLEMISHES ON THE FACE FABRIC – PLEASE ZOOM INTO THE PHOTOS FOR MORE INFORMATION.

DESIGN TIPS: COMBINE WITH A SOLID/TEXTURAL PILLOW IN A neutral shade of taupe or ivory OR MAKE LIKE JUSTINA BLAKENEY AND PILE BLUSH ONTO PINK ONTO ERRR SOME MORE BLUSH – DIVINE, SEE OUR GET THE LOOK HERE!
