MOTIFS: A SERIES OF BLACK AND ROSE VERTICAL BANDS OF VARYING WIDTHS FEATURE ikat dots, floral motifs and tiny geometric accents.  THESE FLORAL MOTIFS MADE THEIR WAY INTO THE WEAVERS’ VERNACULAR DUE TO THE INFLUENCES OF THEIR DUTCH COLONIAL HISTORY.  IT IS SAID THAT NUNS IMPORTED large quantities of dutch crochet INTO THE OUTLYING ISLANDS IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY, WHICH WAS PRESUMABLY UNLIKE ANYTHING PEOPLE HAD SEEN BEFORE.  WE FIND IT FASCINATING HOW THESE textiles chart the history of the nation.

TEXTILE DETAILS: THE INDONESIAN WORD ‘ikat’ means to ‘tie’ or ‘bind’, WHICH ALLUDES TO THE INTRICATE AND MASSIVELY LONGWINDED PROCESS OF CREATING THESE INCREDIBLE TEXTILES.  FROM PICKING THE COTTON TO SNIPPING THE FINAL THREAD, a single piece can take upwards of 14 months to create, AND IT’S NOT UNCOMMON TO TAKE SEVERAL YEARS.

THIS VINTAGE FABRIC COMES FROM A TUBE SKIRT, A ‘POU DULA BUNGA’, WHICH IS THE traditional female dress in many parts of indonesia.  TWO IKAT TEXTILES ARE STITCHED TOGETHER TO FORM A LONG NARROW ‘STRAPLESS DRESS’ {IN WESTERN TERMS}, WHICH IS THEN WRAPPED AROUND THE BODY.  WE LOVE highlighting details of the workmanship THAT GOES INTO OUR PIECES, AND HAVE INCORPORATED THIS CENTRAL SEAM INTO THE PILLOW.

THE DYES USED IN THIS PILLOW ARE 100% natural vegetable dyes. WE’VE BEEN TOLD THAT THE unusual black shade IS ACHIEVED BY STEEPING THREADS IN INDIGO DYE FOR A LONG LONG LONG TIME, AND THEN DYEING THEM WITH TANNIN.  THE gorgeous rose and blush shades ARE FROM THE BARK AND ROOTS OF THE MORINDA TREE, AND THE ECRU SHADE OCCURS WHERE THE wrapped pandan leaves prevent the dye from entering the threads.

WRINKLES: THE OCCASIONAL WRINKLE OR SUNSPOT THAT SOME OF OUR PIECES HAVE ACQUIRED OVER THE YEARS, AS WELL AS THEIR HANDMADE  QUIRKS, ARE PART OF THEIR one of a kind artisanal charm.  THIS PILLOW IS A CORKER HOWEVER, NO IMPERFECTIONS OF NOTE.

DESIGN TIPS: USE IT AS THE BASE FOR A saturated red/pink colour pop, OR COMBINE WITH A SMALL-REPEAT PATTERNED PILLOW IN A NEUTRAL TONE LIKE TAUPE OR IVORY.
