MOTIFS: AN incredibly intricate web of patola-inspired motifs COVER THE WHOLE PILLOW, WITH TWO VERTICAL BANDS ON THE LEFT FEATURING A tumpal border, ikat dots and geometric details.

TEXTILE DETAILS: THE INDONESIAN WORD ‘ikat’ means to ‘tie’ or ‘bind’, WHICH ALLUDES TO THE INTRICATE AND MASSIVELY LONGWINDED PROCESS OF CREATING THESE INCREDIBLE TEXTILES.  FROM PICKING THE COTTON TO SNIPPING THE FINAL THREAD, a single piece can take upwards of 14 months to create, AND IT’S NOT UNCOMMON TO TAKE SEVERAL YEARS.

THIS VINTAGE FABRIC COMES FROM A TUBE SKIRT, A ‘POU DULA BUNGA’, WHICH IS THE traditional female dress in many parts of indonesia.  TWO IKAT TEXTILES ARE STITCHED TOGETHER TO FORM A LONG NARROW ‘STRAPLESS DRESS’ {IN WESTERN TERMS}, WHICH IS THEN WRAPPED AROUND THE BODY.  WE LOVE highlighting details of the workmanship THAT GOES INTO OUR PIECES, AND HAVE INCORPORATED THIS CENTRAL SEAM INTO THE PILLOW.

THE DYES USED IN THIS PILLOW ARE 100% natural vegetable dyes.  THE PURPLE SHADE IS ACHIEVED BY DYEING THE THREADS RED WITH THE bark and roots of the morinda tree, AND THEN STEEPING THEM IN INDIGO FOR A LONG TIME.  THE ECRU SHADE OCCURS WHERE THE WRAPPED PANDAN LEAVES PREVENT THE DYE FROM ENTERING THE THREADS.

WRINKLES: THE OCCASIONAL WRINKLE OR SUNSPOT THAT SOME OF OUR PIECES HAVE ACQUIRED OVER THE YEARS, AS WELL AS THEIR HANDMADE  QUIRKS, ARE PART OF THEIR one of a kind artisanal charm.  THE FACE FABRIC OF THIS PILLOW SHOWS VERY LIGHT WEAR IN THE FORM OF SLIGHT COLOUR FADING – PLEASE ZOOM IN TO THE PHOTOS FOR MORE INFORMATION.

DESIGN TIPS: COMBINE WITH A SOLID OR LARGE-REPEAT PATTERNED PILLOW IN A NEUTRAL TONE OF BLACK, TAUPE OR IVORY.  OR LEOPARD.  leopard is always a winner.
