MOTIFS: WE HAVE TO ADMIT THAT THIS ONE HAS SLIGHTLY OUTFOXED US, BUT ON THE UPSIDE THAT PRESUMABLY MEANS THAT THIS DESIGN IS PRETTY RARE!  WE SEE stylised floral and star motifs RUNNING ALONG THE HORIZONTAL PLANE; VERTICAL BANDS OF INDIGO AND DARK LAVENDER FEATURING ikat dots and tiny geometric details; AND IF YOU SQUINT YOUR EYES REAL HARD YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO MAKE OUT SOME HUMAN ‘STICKMEN’ FIGURES.  BASICALLY IT’S beautiful, but slightly mysterious.

TEXTILE DETAILS: THE INDONESIAN WORD ‘IKAT’ MEANS TO ‘tie’ or ‘bind’, WHICH ALLUDES TO THE INTRICATE AND MASSIVELY LONGWINDED PROCESS OF CREATING THESE INCREDIBLE TEXTILES.  FROM PICKING THE COTTON TO SNIPPING THE FINAL THREAD, a single piece can take upwards of 14 months to create, AND IT’S NOT UNCOMMON TO TAKE SEVERAL YEARS.

THIS VINTAGE FABRIC COMES FROM A TUBE SKIRT, A ‘POU DULA BUNGA’, WHICH IS the traditional female dress in many parts of indonesia.  TWO IKAT TEXTILES ARE STITCHED TOGETHER TO FORM A LONG NARROW ‘STRAPLESS DRESS’ {IN WESTERN TERMS}, WHICH IS THEN WRAPPED AROUND THE BODY.

ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THIS PILLOW YOU CAN SEE THE SEAM WHERE THE TWO PIECES OF FABRIC WERE CONNECTED – IT’S A SMALL DETAIL BUT WE LOVE SHOWCASING THESE unique elements of the workmanship.

THE DYES USED IN THIS PILLOW ARE 100% natural vegetable dyes.  THE VARIOUS SHADES OF BLUE ARE FROM THE LEAVES OF THE INDIGO PLANT, THE rose and blush pink COME FROM THE ROOTS AND BARK OF THE MORINDA TREE {IN WHICH THE THREADS ARE STEEPED FOR DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF TIME TO PRODUCE THE TWO SHADES}, AND THE DARK LAVENDER FROM A COMBINATION OF THE TWO.  THE ECRU SHADE OCCURS WHERE THE wrapped pandan leaves prevent the dye from entering the threads.

WRINKLES: THE OCCASIONAL WRINKLE OR SUNSPOT THAT SOME OF OUR PIECES HAVE ACQUIRED OVER THE YEARS, AS WELL AS THEIR HANDMADE  QUIRKS, ARE PART OF THEIR one of a kind artisanal charm.  THE FACE FABRIC OF THIS PILLOW SHOWS VERY SLIGHT SIGNS OF ITS AGE – PLEASE ZOOM IN TO THE PHOTOS FOR MORE INFORMATION.

DESIGN TIPS: COMBINE WITH A SOLID OR LARGE-REPEAT PATTERNED PILLOW IN A similar palette of blues and purples, OR GO NEUTRAL WITH WHITES OR TAUPES.
