TEXTILE DETAILS: BUNA IS A TYPE OF TEXTILE unique to the island of timor, IN THE EAST OF THE INDONESIAN ARCHIPELAGO.  IT LOOKS A LITTLE LIKE EMBROIDERY BUT INSTEAD OF BEING ADDED TO A PRE-FINISHED TEXTILE, IT IS ACTUALLY WOVEN INTO IT BY WRAPPING SHORT colourful supplementary weft threads.  IT CAN TAKE UP TO 18 MONTHS TO CREATE ONE OF THESE BEAUTIES.

TRADITIONALLY IN PARTS OF TIMOR THE social status of a woman WAS INDICATED BY THE QUANTITY OF BUNA TEXTILES ON HER CLOTHING.  ONLY ARISTOCRATIC LADIES HAD THE MEANS AND THE TIME TO PRACTICE THIS COMPLEX WEAVING TECHNIQUE.

GENERALLY solely synthetic dyes ARE USED IN BUNA TEXTILES AND HAVE BEEN FOR A LONG TIME, UNLIKE OUR VINTAGE IKATS THAT ARE MADE PURELY USING vegetable and mineral pigments.

THIS TRIBAL BAG WAS MADE IN THE LAST THREE YEARS, FROM A vintage buna textile, BEADS OF VARIOUS STYLES AND COLOURS, COTTON SIDE TASSELS AND ANTIQUE COPPER ONE CENT netherlands east indies guilder coins (WHICH STOPPED BEING PRODUCED UPON INDONESIA’S INDEPENDENCE IN 1945).

WRINKLES: THE OCCASIONAL WRINKLE OR SUNSPOT THAT SOME OF OUR PIECES HAVE ACQUIRED OVER THE YEARS, AS WELL AS THEIR HANDMADE  QUIRKS, ARE PART OF THEIR one of a kind artisanal charm.  THERE ARE A COUPLE OF MINOR PULLED THREADS ON THIS BUNA TEXTILE, BUT  given its life story WE’RE SURPRISED IT’S AS PRISTINE AS THIS!  PLEASE ZOOM INTO THE PHOTOS FOR MORE INFORMATION.

DESIGN TIPS: COMBINE WITH dramatic black and white photography AND/OR OTHER MONOCHROME TEXTILES FOR A MASCULINE-STYLE DISPLAY, OR GO BRIGHT WITH saturated imagery and colourful prints.
